June 28. As we emerge from the pandemic, destinations are scrambling to attract more seat capacity. Colombia is no exception, striving to regain the positive momentum it had pre-COVID-19 as a desirable destination on the rise.

That’s why it’s significant that 11 international airlines have already announced the opening of 23 new routes to Colombia in 2021. The South American country is attending Routes Americas 2021 to share why it is a success story worth talking about.

“Recovering the country’s air connectivity has been one of the priorities within the economic reactivation and, thanks to joint promotion work with airlines, airports, destinations and tour operators in our country, we have managed to reconnect Colombia with the world,” said Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia, the government entity in charge of promoting international tourism, foreign direct investment, non-mining exports and the country’s brand.

Some of the new routes that have begun to operate are New York-Bogotá with JetBlue; Cancun-Medellín with Wingo; and New York-Bogotá, Medellín and Cali with American Airlines. American has opted to increase its presence in Colombia and that is why during 2021 it has boosted its capacity by 145 percent compared to 2019. The airline has been expanding its capacity on air routes from Miami to Bogotá, Cali, Cartagena and Medellín.
