On Wednesday, the Minister of Health Daniel Salas advised that Costa Rica surpassed the 51,000 mark of confirmed COVID-19 cases. This news was followed up by a strong public message from the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, reminding citizens of their personal responsibility for stopping the spread of the virus.
Wednesday was also the first day of Phase One of the new pandemic management model and the day with the highest number of Covid-19 cases recorded (1,327). Public Health experts project that the continuation of 1,000 cases per day will overwhelm the public hospital capacity to manage Covid-19 cases by the beginning of October.
The Ministry of Health advised that in anticipation of a capacity crisis in Public Sector Hospitals , the Ministry plans to incorporate the capacity of Private Sector Hospitals into the national inventory. It is unclear how Government will compensate the private hospitals for use of their bed capacity and treatment expense. As of Thursday, no agreement has been signed, nor has the staffing plan been defined.
