On July 12, Florida recorded a state record of 15,299 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, about a quarter of all daily infections in the United States. The total number of infections amounts to more than 269,000 cases.
The state of Florida, with just 7% of the US population, beat California’s previous daily record.
The latest updates were released a day after the reopening of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, but with security measures including the use of masks and the widespread use of disinfectants. Disney World partially reopened two of its four Orlando theme parks on Saturday.
The number of cases in Florida has continued to rise despite Republican Governor Ron DeSantis ordering some bars to close again last month.
The issue with face masks has become highly politicized in the United States, and opponents say that having to wear them invades personal freedom. There have been protests against masks and other coronavirus measures in several states.
