Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the measure after 3 Indonesians arrived in Malaysia seeking medical treatment without any notification given to the government by the medical tourism agencies. Although medical tourism is technically included in the list of activities allowed to operate, the requirements to enter the country as a medical tourist are very strict. Besides, the spread of fake news regarding COVID-19 concerns politicians as it may cause anxiety to the population.

Malaysia reported 26 new cases of COVID-19 on August 16. In total, 9,175 cases have been reported there. On the other hand, Indonesia reported 2,345 new cases of COVID-19 on August 16. In total, 137,468 cases have been reported there.
