Nicaragua, September 29th. Dr. Eddy Valverde of the Unidad Médica Nicaragüense (UMN), announced that 107 healthcare staff members died due to COVID-19 infection. Among the victims were 49 doctors, 24 nurses, 14 administrative staff, 8 laboratory staff, 3 medical visitors, 3 dentists and 7 categorized as “others”.
He also reported that many of the workers have been denied testing, or an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Valverde called on the population to maintain the measures of social distancing, use of masks, hand washing and only attend essential activities such as economic and labor.
“The families of our doctors are devastated, widowed, orphaned, and left in a very vulnerable state. The life of the human being is the only thing we have and once it is gone it cannot be replaced with anything. Unfortunately, many of our colleagues, even after death, have not been given the right to have an accurate diagnosis or coronavirus test”, said Valverde.
