As more airlines suspend service to Managua International Airport, Nicaragua is left with only one inbound airline that has scheduled commercial flights for the month of November. Avianca is the only international airlines currently operating in Nicaragua. Nevertheless, flight frequency is very low, and Avianca’s last flight was on September 19. The situation results in lack of access for inbound & outbound passengers and goods, therefore isolating the country in the middle of what is usually the peak travel season. While some airlines announced a planned return on December 2nd, the situation is not encouraging.
The president of the Nicaragua National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR), Mrs. Lucy Valenti, stated” “There is a risk that an entire year will pass before operations are normalized. With the exception of Avianca, everything points to that conclusion. Only the Government would be able to make a difference by relaxing the measures it has imposed on the airlines to restart operations”.
