Religious tourism is one of the oldest forms of planned travel in human history, and it remains a huge part of the travel industry to this day. An estimated 330 million tourists visit the world’s most popular religious sites every year, generating around US$18 billion in global revenues. With the global pandemic, popular destinations like Jerusalem, Vatican City, and Mecca, are suffering the consequences of the restrictions imposed by their local governments. Likewise, Buddhist and Hindu sites in India and Nepal are experiencing the same situation.
