July 18. Talk recently has been that airlines have not staffed up adequately to meet the high demand from travelers. But that’s not the case apparently with at least one major airline. As of June 2022, Southwest Airlines has increased its total, active, full-time equivalent employee base to more than 61,000—higher than the number of Southwest employees at the end of 2019 before the start of the pandemic. This hiring accomplishment is aimed at adding resources and increased reliability for the airline’s customers and employees during the busy summer travel season and beyond.
Southwest expects to add and train thousands more employees throughout the year—with the majority of individuals being hired into operational roles such as Flight Attendants, Pilots, Ground Operations, Technical Operations and Customer Support & Services. Since last year, Southwest has increased the number of individuals on each of its operational teams as it continues delivering Southwest hospitality to each other and customers across its network.
And lest you think Southwest isn’t an expert in this kind of hiring and training operation, the airline released a book about its business practices.
Celebrating more than 50 years of putting people first, the airline has published “Leading with Heart: Living & Working the Southwest Way.” Southwest fans can purchase the book, highlighting a set of fun and engaging leadership tenets. This book, which shares valuable lessons from iconic Southwest leaders past and present, including the late Herb Kelleher, is exclusively sold at Southwest The Store.
