June 9. Spirit Airlines, already the largest carrier in Fort Lauderdale, plans to move into Miami Airport this fall with 30 routes. The routes, most of which are to be daily, will launch between Oct. 6 and Nov. 18, pending Spirit’s anticipated acquisition of gate and counter space at the airport.

A Miami move will put Spirit in competition with American, the airport’s largest airline, along with fellow ultralow-cost carrier Frontier, which designated Miami as a base in 2020. Frontier is scheduled to operate 632 flights from Miami this month to 29 destinations, according to Cirium scheduling data.

In a statement Tuesday evening, Spirit said its entry into Miami will not lead to a reduction in its service from nearby Fort Lauderdale, where in July the carrier will reach 100 daily departures for the first time.

“The demand is there to support growth throughout South Florida,” the airline said. “Our flying out of MIA is in support of continued expansion in the region. Along with Palm Beach International Airport, it allows us to give our guests more options when they travel to and from South Florida.”

The carrier said it will announce flight times and initial pricing once it finalizes gate and counter space. Its final schedule might be adjusted based upon the outcome of that process.
