October 29. Tripadvisor removed nearly 1 million fake and fraudulent reviews from its platform in 2020, the company said.
Tripadvisor analyzed all of the reviews on the site from 2020, and rejected or removed over two million reviews that did not comply with the travel site’s community standards, it said in a report released Wednesday.
3.6% of all submissions last year were identified as fake, according to data from Tripadvisor. A majority of the reviews, including the 1 million fake ones, were removed before they were published online.
Travelers submitted over 26 million reviews to the site in 2020, according to Tripadvisor. More than two million review submissions were removed or rejected from the platform for reasons such as community standard violations or fake activity, the report says. A large majority of the reviews taken down were flagged by Tripadvisor’s moderation team, not users or businesses.
