U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada – COVID-19 Information

Country-Specific Information:

  • Canada has confirmed cases of COVID-19 within its borders.
  • On July 16, the United States and Canada announced  a mutual agreement to extend restrictions on non-essential travel across our shared border for an additional 30 days. 
    • “Non-essential” travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature. “Essential travel” still permitted includes: work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic services and supply chains, health, immediate medical care, and safety and security.
    • U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and individuals with valid travel documents will be exempted.
    • Trade and business travel will continue to operate across our borders, ensuring workers and goods are not impeded.
  • Land borders are operating at reduced capacity and with limited hours. Visit CBP and CBSA for details on land border crossings.
  • Travellers entering Canada must present a credible 14-day quarantine plan. Information on what constitutes a credible quarantine plan is available on the Public Health Agency of Canada’s website here.
  • On June 8 the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced modified entry restrictions for certain immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Read CBSA’s full announcement here.
  • In addition to restrictions on non-essential travel between the United States and Canada, a number of provinces and territories have put in place specific restrictions for travel across their borders, including for domestic travelers.   • As of July 31, 2020, at 12:01am PDT stricter rules and additional entry conditions will be imposed on travellers transiting through Canada to or from Alaska for a non-discretionary purpose. Full information is available in the CBSA News release.
  • All passengers on flights departing or arriving at Canadian airports are now required to wear a non-medical mask or face covering that covers their mouth and nose. Please check the Canadian Government’s COVID-19 travel restrictions and exemptions page for additional information. 
    • Note: Canadian authorities continue to ask the public to reserve medical masks for healthcare workers and first responders.
  • On April 5, 2020, Transport Canada issued measures limiting access to all Canadian waters by “passenger vessels” carrying more than 12 passengers “engaged in activities of an optional or discretionary nature”, including tourism and recreation (e.g. short-term cruises, tour boats and sight-seeing vessels) The new regulations also prevent any Canadian cruise ship from mooring, navigating, or transiting in Canadian Arctic waters (including Nunatsiavut, Nunavik and the Labrador Coast).   • On March 28, the Government of Canada issued new domestic transportation measures designed to mitigate the risk of further spreading COVID-19 within Canada. These initiatives impact both air and rail travel. See Transport Canada’s COVID-19 website for information about COVID-19 measures and guidance issued by Transport Canada.
  • The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns of an increase in fraudulent actors seeking to exploit businesses, individuals, and institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Schemes include email phishing, fake telephone calls for assistance, and unproven treatments to “cure” COVID-19. Please contact local police if you think you are a victim of a fraud scheme.   • The U.S. Embassy and Consulate Generals are monitoring the current situation in Canada. The Embassy and Consulates are aware of the hardships that border closures and travel restrictions are creating for U.S. citizens who need to get United States. If you have not done so, please enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the U.S. Embassy and Consulates can contact you with updated information and in an emergency.
  • Due to the possibility of an extended disruption, please see the CDC’s latest recommendations for the most recent information on what you can do to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19.
  • The U.S. Embassy and Consulate Generals in Canada are operating in a limited capacity in accordance with recommendations from both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The U.S. Embassy requires that any staff returning to Canada from international travel adhere to a mandatory 14-day self-isolation period.
