April 19. International Medical Group (IMG), an industry-leading international medical insurance, global assistance, and travel insurance company, released results from its Future of Travel Survey, which gauged past international travelers from the USA regarding their overall willingness to travel internationally in 2021. Among several key takeaways and future travel trends, the survey revealed increased confidence towards travel, reporting that 71 percent plan on traveling internationally in 2021.
Of the 71 percent of respondents planning to travel internationally in 2021, 49 percent plan to embark on their first trip abroad before September. To break it down further, 13 percent will travel spring of 2021, 36 percent will travel summer of 2021, 32 percent will travel fall of 2021 and 14 percent will travel winter of 2021. Domestically, 88 percent of respondents are planning to travel this year, with 44 percent planning to take more than three domestic trips.
As the travel industry passes the one-year anniversary of the global pandemic, 86 percent of survey respondents said COVID-19 affected their willingness to travel, with 57 percent saying COVID-19 had a major effect on their willingness to travel. According to respondents, key motivating factors that will drive travel include receiving the vaccine (69 percent), flexible cancellation policies (64 percent) and low fares (57 percent). The majority of respondents (59 percent) said they are more likely to travel to destinations that require a COVID-19 vaccine.
Survey respondents ranked the precautions based on importance to them regarding their own safety. In rank order, they are required masks, required proof of COVID-19 vaccine, social distancing, required proof of negative COVID-19 test, capacity limits, extra cleaning measures, touchless travel, temperature screenings and required quarantine period. Travel insurance will was on the mind of respondents, with 52 percent saying they are more likely to purchase a travel protection or travel medical insurance plan for their next trip.
