My travel insurance credit cards saved me $4,500 in just two years

May 19. We live in a world of constant unknowns that can affect our travels at any given moment. Three years ago, a global pandemic put a virtual stop to leisure and business travel, which no one saw coming. Even a minor fender bender can put an end to a road trip you’ve been planning for months.

Travel insurance offers peace of mind, but what most people don’t realize is that it doesn’t have to come at a cost. Many credit cards offer pretty comprehensive travel protections that can save them thousands of dollars when things don’t go according to plan.

I experienced this first hand over the past year and a half. I had two different instances where the travel protections from my American Express credit card came in handy, saving me over $4,500 (not to mention a lot of hassle). All I had to do was file a simple claim form, provide a few requested documents, and wait for a check in the mail. While it did take a few months to get reimbursed, it was well worth it since my out-of-pocket cost was significantly reduced.

The annual fees on my American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express cards are significant, but I got more than my money’s worth with the money I saved through travel insurance.
